Industrial digital safety &
innovative software

JMNL Innovation specialises in industrial (OT) safety and helps organisations with practical, risk-driven cyber security and OT security where conventional (IT) security does not fit. Our vision of OT architecture does not rely on software-based security alone: combining it with hardware-based security and a human-in-the-loop is, in our view, essential. We bring extensive knowledge and experience in hardware-based security, such as PLCs and data diodes. Where necessary we develop innovative, secure solutions to go that one step further and achieve genuine safety. Thanks to this innovative approach, our solutions are future-proof and reach beyond conventional methods. Interested? Get in touch — no strings attached.

Our expertise

Safety and innovation combined

OT security genuinely demands a different approach. Conventional IT security does not always work in an OT environment and can in some cases even introduce additional risk. An incident in OT is not necessarily limited to software or data. It can also cause physical damage, with potential consequences for operational continuity, the safety of people and the environment. That is why we combine technical expertise, processes, domain knowledge and company culture to arrive at solutions that genuinely work in practice.
We also believe security should not depend on software alone. In OT especially, people play an important role in raising the level of safety. People as the weakest link? Certainly not in an OT environment.
Does the right solution not exist yet? Then we build it. We develop innovative solutions that do what is needed — secure, practical and suited to the environment.

OT & Industrial Security

OT security calls for a fundamentally different approach than IT security. Every OT environment is unique and requires tailored work that fits the installation, the equipment, the processes and the people. Off-the-shelf solutions often fall short. That is why we combine OT expertise, out-of-the-box thinking and knowledge of modern security techniques such as ICS/SCADA security and hardware-based security with data diodes. The link between OT and IT or cloud deserves particular attention. After all, a cyber incident in OT can lead to production downtime, physical damage or even danger to people and the environment. We design and build OT-safe connections to external networks in which both technology and people are central.

Innovative Solutions

Innovation sometimes needs a nudge. That is why we develop secure-by-design custom software and proofs-of-concept to explore new possibilities. We let ourselves be guided by our clients' questions. That sometimes leads to surprising results: from tracking go-karts in real time with cameras to improve the visitor experience, to developing data diode architectures for safely connecting OT networks to the outside world. We also continuously research new technologies and their practical applications. That keeps us curious, keeps us learning, and allows us to help our clients with innovative solutions that genuinely match their needs.

Products and services

We sometimes develop projects and innovative solutions further into services and products. That makes our knowledge more widely available and helps more organisations improve their security. Below is a small selection of our current offerings.

Workshop: how do you start with OT security?
Where do you begin with OT security? This interactive workshop gives you insight into your organisation's security maturity and shows which concrete steps are needed to better protect your OT environment.

Safely opening up OT systems
USB sticks, updates, suppliers and external connections introduce risk even for isolated OT systems. OT systems are becoming less and less isolated. We help open up OT systems safely, with an approach that minimises risk and fits the specific environment.

Risk analysis of OT systems
An OT risk analysis calls for a different approach than IT. We focus on the actual operational risks and their impact. Together with your organisation we map those risks and translate them into concrete measures.

About us

OT security is a discipline of its own

JMNL Innovation was founded in 2016 out of a specific conviction: OT security is a discipline of its own. With more than 25 years of experience in software development and over 15 years specialising in OT security for critical infrastructure, we help organisations genuinely secure their automation systems — not just on paper.

Where conventional IT security approaches often introduce risk in OT environments, we deliberately choose an approach that suits OT systems. We frequently use hardware-based solutions such as data diodes and unidirectional gateways. These offer physical certainty that software solutions simply cannot provide. And safety does not have to be expensive.

A sound risk analysis exposes the real vulnerabilities — allowing solutions and measures to be developed where they matter. We specialise in finding the genuinely relevant risks within your specific installation, culture and operations, and translating them into concrete, workable and affordable measures.

  • OT security is a fundamentally different discipline from IT security
  • Tailored per installation, culture and equipment — no generic frameworks
  • Risk analyses that expose real risks, not paper security
  • Safety does not have to be expensive — smart choices make the difference

"OT security is not IT security. Pasting conventional measures onto OT systems creates risk rather than reducing it. Treating OT as IT also overlooks the distinctive character of OT. OT is directly connected to the physical world and is often an essential part of the business operation. That is why we must be careful with measures that could introduce new risks to the operation. Hardware-based solutions — such as data diodes — can offer certainty that software alone cannot provide."

OT & Industrial security

OT Security

Operational Technology (OT) covers the systems that measure, control and monitor processes in the physical world: PLCs, SCADA systems, sensors, actuators and industrial networks.

But where does IT end and OT begin? That is not always straightforward. An engineering workstation, for example, is technically an IT system, yet plays a direct role in managing the OT environment. It is precisely that interdependence that makes industrial security interesting.

The Purdue model helps to understand this environment. From sensors and control on the shop floor to SCADA, MES and the link with the IT environment: each layer has its own function, risks and security questions.

We therefore look not only at individual systems, but at the coherence between technology, network and operation. In doing so we aim for a clear separation between IT and OT, with the necessary connection realised through one carefully designed and secured interface.
